Helping Women Find Purpose In Midlife

The word “Purpose” can be so daunting. What is my Purpose in life? How do I find my Purpose? As humans we feel like we need to have one defining Purpose that we aspire to, that makes us feel a part of something that we can cling to. When we don’t know what that purpose is, we feel discouraged and confused and question ourselves and our abilities.

Often, we center our purpose by the roles we play. For example, to be the best mom, wife, daughter, sister, friend and employee that we can be. But is that life’s purpose?  Do we all have to have a singular purpose that drives us, or can we have multiple reasons for getting up in the morning?

One answer is explained by Eckhart Tolle in his “A New Earth Awakening to your Life’s purpose”. He says that, “you should connect activities with your inner, primary purpose, so that a deeper meaning flows into what you do. If you ignore your inner purpose, no matter what you do, even if it looks spiritual, the ego will creep into how you do it, and so the means will corrupt the end”.

When we begin to think about our inner purpose, rather than the outer manifestations of our actions (such as being promoted in the corporate world, or other people’s opinions of us) we become less stressed and less ego driven.

We explore how to find our purpose through our course, “It’s My Time Now”. It builds upon the framework laid out in The Pyramid of Reinvention. The base is rediscovering yourself, and as we touched on in the previous section, this gives us the Power to tap into our true essence. We can tap into our Purpose by envisioning ourselves in great and vivid detail. A concept called the Inner Mentor* is introduced which is ourselves, 20 years from now. Where are we? What are we doing, and more importantly – what drove us to get there?

Paradoxically, we can tap into our Purpose by envisioning our future, but also by honoring the small things in the present moment. As Tolle explains, “for some people, there is a sudden or gradual break with their past; their work, living situation, relationships – everything undergoes profound change. It comes through awareness, not through thinking”. If you tap into this present moment awareness, you will notice uncanny opportunities or unexplained coincidences which show up in your life. These are not chances at all, but space being created in your life for something new to emerge.

As Guatama Buddha said, “YOUR PURPOSE IN LIFE IS TO FIND YOUR PURPOSE AND GIVE YOUR WHOLE HEART AND SOUL TO IT
